Third graders will have 15 core words, 2 special words and 3 review words, for a total of 20 words each week in spelling. The 15 core words follow a specific lesson ( long vowels, prefixes, contraction etc.) The 2 special words are word wall words, which will be put up on our word wall after they are learned. The 3 review words will be the 3 words that were missed the most often in the previous week or weeks. I will not be able to give these words to you until Monday of the week of the test.
There are 30 units listed below. Every 5 weeks we will have a review week. That week I will pick 20 words that I feel need more review. I will send that list home with your child on Monday of those weeks.
Every Wednesday we will have a practice test on the 20 words. The purpose of this test is to see on which words your child needs to work harder.
On Friday your child will be tested on all 20 words. In addition to the 20 words your child will be dictated 3 sentences that include the spelling words. To get a word correct it must be spelled correctly in the list and in the sentences.
Spelling worksheets will be given to your child every Monday. These sheets will always be copied on yellow paper and will be due every Thursday.
